Great Egret was painted in December 1943 at Annapolis, Maryland, while Dr. Earl Henry was serving as a dentist at the U.S. Naval Academy. The cypress swamp is more typical of sites he may have visited during his earlier tour at Parris Island Marine Base in South Carolina.

Great Egret is printed on very white glossy paper which illuminates the fine detail of this painting. The paper is a little thinner than desirable, sometimes resulting in a wavy look, but it is a beautiful painting.
